So maybe you’re wondering what hypnosis is, you’ve seen movies in the past, and you’ve seen things happen on stage in entertainment.
I’m here to tell you that hypnosis is purely a relaxed state, where you are focussed and in what we call a flow state. If you’ve been on YouTube recently and you’re interested in this kind of stuff you may be seeing things like, ‘listen to this Theta brainwave sound’ or ‘Alpha brainwave sound’. These binaural beats and sounds can help your mind relax.
During a hypnosis session, we use relaxation techniques to help you achieve the Alpha and Theta brainwave state. You are not asleep. You are not out of control you are certainly not unconscious, you are in fact in a natural flow state and in that state you might find yourself more focused. It’s an internal focus instead of an external focus.
You might be asking - well…I’ve seen people on stage and they look very out of control!
Know that 100 people get up on stage and through suggestions to relax the hypnotist will tell 90 people to get off stage. By the time the show actually starts there are 10 people left, those 10 people through the hypnotists eyes are highly, highly willing to be fun and silly
Those 10 people are ready to do some silly things. They are quite relaxed and in a creative flow state. During a hypnosis session you are highly motivated to make changes. You wind up in that flow state, where you are relaxed and focussed, but if I as the hypnotist were to suddenly say cluck like a chicken, you would instantly come out of hypnosis because you are not there to do that and you are not highly motivated to be silly. You are highly motivated to make positive changes in your life!
The reason people on stage get kicked off of stage by the hypnotist is because they are hesitant to follow along in the silliness. You will hear and see the hypnotist say relax completely slump over in your chair, people that hesitate to just follow along are not going to be great subjects for the performance. This does not mean that they’re not hypnotizable. It merely means that it might take a little longer to have them go into that relaxed state, but the hypnotist on stage doesn’t have that long to help them get there.
So back to hypnosis sessions, we help you relax through techniques like progressive relaxation, background music if you like, imagery, counting from 10 to 1. There are many ways to find yourself in a relaxed state.
All in all hypnosis is a natural state, but one could say that hypnosis is more of an action word. We do hypnosis in an alpha-theta brain wave state, there is nothing to be scared of when it comes to hypnosis. You are always in control. Heck! If you have to go to the bathroom during a hypnosis session, you just say - Hilary I have to go to the bathroom - and you get up and you go and then you come back to do the work.
There are so many amazing things that you can do during a hypnosis session, you are really connecting in with your internal world. When we go into our internal world, we can make positive changes to our life, to our behaviours. A client will often say that they are looking at the world differently, even you internal world differently. they feel better about themselves. They feel more confident, they have less anxiety and stress.
Hypnosis is a wonderful tool to increase mindfulness, self-love, confidence all the aspects of life that we wish we had more of on a day-to-day basis.
